The CIFAR

A global research organization called CIFAR (formerly the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) brings together groups of the best scientists from all around the globe to tackle challenging problems. It was established in 1982 and receives financing from the federal government of Canada, the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, as well as from individuals, foundations, and businesses.

More than 400 researchers from 22 countries and more than 130 institutions are supported by the CIFAR team. The researchers are split evenly between Canada and other countries. The yearly budget for CIFAR in 2018 was $30M. 2017 saw the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy being developed and led by CIFAR.
